Technical Note 16

Reaction Software Inc.

Todd Reed

February 28, 2004

In order to help diagnose a syncing problem, Reaction Software support may request that you send a copy of your HotSync.log file. Your HotSync.log file is appended to each time you perform a HotSync with status information about the HotSync operation. If any errors occurred during syncing, the HotSync.log file may contain information about the error that is useful in diagnosing the source of the error. This technical note explains how to locate this file.

Your HotSync.log file is located in: HotSync-Directory\Your-Directory\HotSync.log, where HotSync-Directory and Your-Directory are as follows:

HotSync-Directory
The exact location of the main HotSync directory depends where you chose to install the Palm Desktop Software. The default location is typically C:\Palm or C:\Program Files\Palm. If you have a Palm OS handheld that is not made by PalmOne (for example, Handspring, Sony, or Handera), then the name of the Palm directory may be different.
Your-Directory
Your individual user directory is derived from your name, as stored on your device. For example, John Doe's user directory is DoeJ.

For example, the HotSync.log file for user John Doe might be: C:\Palm\DoeJ\HotSync.log.

If you are still unable to locate your HotSync.log file, use the Windows file search to search for HotSync.log on all your hard drives.

Express Sync 1.17 and later also produces a file called ExpressSync.log. This file is located in: HotSync-Directory\Your-Directory\Express Sync\ExpressSync.log.
